Course overview
3D printed textiles are flexible and stretchy, can be stitched with a normal sewing machine, but also have properties - both in terms of aesthetics and performance - that could never be achieved with traditional textile manufacturing methods.

This is our first course that is not just open for professionals from the footwear industry, but also for people from other industries, such as apparel, jewelry and interior. With the techniques that you will learn you can make a shoe upper, but als a bracelet, a jacket, a lamp shade and whatever else you could imagine.

We will adjust the course contents to each participànt´s level. You can join if you are an absolute beginner and have never printed and have no 3D modeling experience and then we will teach you techniques that are a suitable for you. If you do have experience with Grasshopper, then we will teach you how to program certain algorithms for making 3D textiles.

This course has a special early bird rate until November 29. There is a maximum of 6 participants, so each person has their own printer to work on.

Course format

classes are from 10:00 - 18:00 each day, with a 1 hour lunch break

In this course we use affordable 3D printers - ranging between 400-800 euros - making it easy to replicate what you learned when you get back.

We jump right into things on the first days of the course by starting to learn how to use a 3D printer and the slicing software that you need for that, and by exploring different materials for 3D printing. We will generally work with flexible materials - which can either be fully recycled or composted - but if people want to make chainmail with more rigid materials then that is also possible.

For the first to days we will be exploring various options as well as the design theory behind printed textiles and just making various small swatches.
Then on the Wednesday we will sit down with each person to work on a textile project that they would like to achieve. What that can be depends on your experience level with 3D modeling. If you have no experience at all in 3D modeling we will work with you on textiles that can be printed flat and if you do have 3D modeling skills, we can work with you on a textile that is already in a 3D shape.

We will also look at several ways to enhance your textile through airbrushing or other methods of finishing.

You will then create and finish your object in the next days, so you will have it completed on the Friday.  But most importantly, you will go home with the knowledge needed to continue to print textiles by yourself. Below are some examples of textiles we printed at our lab.

This course combines very well with our courses in 3D Printing with AI and 3D Printing Wearable Footwear. You can choose the full bundle or if you just want to follow two of them, then apply code SECOND20 at checkout to get a 20% discount on the second one.
