What is this course about?
This course covers all the basic to intermediate operations in that footwear designers need in order to create 3D designs of lasts, uppers and soles. Rhino is not footwear-specific software, but there are many plugins for footwear available and it is the worldwide industry standard for 3D design that is also used by mold shops, shoe factories and independent design studios.
Footwear-specific design programs - which are often much more costly - are generally based upon the same principles as Rhino, so once you know Rhino, any other 3D design packages are easy to learn!
By the end of the course you will be able to design a complete shoe in 3D, so you can visualize your ideas professionally and can quickly make prototypes, for instance through 3D printing, either at the factory or at an (in-house) sample room.
Who is this course for?
This program is meant for footwear designers and developers that want to be able to design in 3D in order to optimize their design and prototyping process and/or to be able to adjust 3D files that they receive from factories or from other partners.
It is also suitable for those that want to produce their own wearable shoe collections through 3D printing and other digital manufacturing methods.
No prior knowledge of the software is required, however, we do expect participants to have experience in footwear design, so they understand what they are actually drawing in 3D. It is also an advantage to have knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop since you will learn how to import these files into Rhino as a base for your 3D designs.
If you want to learn how to design professional outsoles - which you could then model in 3D using what you learn in this Rhino course - then we strongly recommend you also take our course.
After you finished Rhino you can continue with Grasshopper I, our beginner course for parametric design. Grasshopper is an integral part of Rhino, so you do not have to buy new software for that.
We offer attractive bundles for both our Professional Sole Design and our Grasshopper course. You see them when you click on the ENROLL button.
What is the course format?
We have given many offline Rhino courses already and we have translated our experiences from these classes into this online course. 3D design is a steep learning curve and we know that students will always have questions. That is why we combine videos that you can study by yourself with live webinars during which we will answer any questions. We do require people to send in their questions before the webinar, so our instructor Lorenzo Masini can prepare for them. If nobody sends in questions, the webinar will be cancelled. Webinars take place every other Sunday, at 4pm CET. The dates are communicated on our Community Page.
You can also post questions on the Community Page and Lorenzo will answer these when he is available. Since all participants follow the same pace, it also happens that they help each other.
We will have three subjects: lasts, uppers and (mid)soles, in that order. Each subject contains at least 2-3 hours of video content, split up into short videos of about 10 minutes each, so it is easy to find a specific operation in your video files, should you want to see that again.
The course content will be available in a specific order that resembles the average design workflow. We start with lasts then upper and then soles. Two weeks after the release of each module, we will have the live webinar about that subject, so participants have enough time to practice first. The webinars will be recorded and shared as well.
What is included in the course price?
You will receive at least 2-3 hours of video for each module, so about 9 hours in total. These videos are split up into shorter clips of about 10 minutes each. All class material is included: you will receive the images and the scanned last that are used in the exercises.
The regular course price includes 12 months of access to all class material. If you want to have permanent access you can take a subscription or pay single amount after the 12 months have ended, then you will also receive any updates of the class material and will have access to all future live webinars as well.
You will receive a certificate of completion of the course once you have sent in your completed versions of all three modules. Since this is a course for professionals, you will not receive any academic credits for it though.
ATTENTION: Rhino 3D software is NOT included in the course! You can download a free 90-day trial . This is fully functional. Rhino is available for both PC and Mac.
